For information on the New Year's Resolution Challenge that started all this, with a video of me singing "Bitch Better Have My Money" by Rihanna in four part harmony with a ukulele, CLICK HERE. The short version: Cover the #1 song in iTunes for every month of 2015.
This was the iTunes #1 on the first of January, 2015, and like many of you, I loved this song the first seven or eight thousand times I heard it. Somewhere around the nine thousand mark, though, it started getting a little old. The radio loved this thing, though; if it weren't for the rule about covering the #2 if you've already covered the #1, this thing would have covered me right up through spring - and it's not slowing down. I promise you you'll hear it on the radio today, whether you want to or not.
The song has good bones, though; you can do it in a bunch of different styles, with different instrumentations, and still get something that's pretty entertaining. I consider that to be the ultimate test of quality songwriting: can the song survive different interpretations and still sound distinctive? In this case, the answer is definitely yes.
When in doubt, go bluegrass. I'd have used a mandolin if I had one; as it is, you'll have to make due with ukes. I wish I could say that the country angle was a deliberate artistic statement - it's just the only way I could think of to play the tune and still sound like me.
I made this video with iPhone app called Gridplay; I think it worked out better than the last one, considering how out-of-sync the video was. No fancy audio tricks to report. I just used the mic on my iPhone, which turned out surprisingly well. The next few should have slightly higher audio production values, now that I have the video part figured out.
